Tourism, ICT Ministers Discuss Boosting Internet Speed in Tourist Facilities


The Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled El-Enany and the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat have held an expanded meeting with the Chairman of the Egyptian Tourism Federation (ETF) and leaders of both ministries.

The meeting is within the framework of the ongoing coordination and periodic meetings between the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) to follow up the implementation status of digital transformation projects and develop the tourism technological infrastructure in light of the cooperation protocol signed between both ministries in November 2020.

The meeting discussed the latest developments in the project of raising internet speed in tourist facilities, nationwide, especially in Sharm El-Sheikh as a first phase, as part of the arrangements for hosting the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP27).

During the meeting, the relevant implemented work was reviewed, some problems encountered during the implementation process were discussed, and optimal solutions were developed, along with the development of key points to speed up the work system and finish raising internet speed in all types of tourist facilities and according to the pre-set schedule, especially facilities in Sharm El-Sheikh, to reach the optimal levels as part of the tourist preparations for hosting COP27 guests. This will ensure the success of the conference and that Egypt will appear in an appropriate manner, and also highlight the strong structure of the Egyptian tourist destination.

Moreover, the meeting dealt with a review, through a PowerPoint presentation, on the latest business developments in the digital transformation projects of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, which are implemented in cooperation with the MCIT, including projects for automating tourism services, managing system of geographic systems, and covering archaeological sites and museums with internet connection.

The project covers 40 museums and archaeological sites which are open for visits. Additionally, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir and the Saqqara antiquities area are targeted as a first phase, within the framework of the plan of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to develop and raise the efficiency of services provided to Egyptian and foreign visitors at archaeological sites and museums to improve their experience during the visit, in addition to qualifying them for accessible tourism.

The meeting also discussed the implementation status of the Augmented Reality (AR) project, the documentation of antiquities, as well as the inclusion of the services of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities on the Digital Egypt platform.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Tourism Affairs Ghada Shalaby, Deputy ICT Minister for Administrative Development, Digital Transformation and Automation Khaled El Attar, Deputy ICT Minister for Infrastructure Raafat Hindy, ETF Chairman Ahmed El-Wassief, Managing Director and CEO of Telecom Egypt Adel Hamed, and leaders of both ministries.
