Environment, ICT Ministers Discuss Tech Arrangements for Hosting COP27


The Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad and the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat have met to discuss cooperation and to the arrangements for hosting the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), in the presence of leaders of both ministries.

In the meeting, they discussed the requirements that MCIT will work to implement in COP27, in terms of using the latest global technologies. This is along with developing the plans necessary to confront any difficulties or challenges that may be encountered during COP27, and identifying the devices required and latest advanced mechanisms for the entry of participants into the conference hall.

During the meeting, the Minister of Environment praised the fruitful and constructive cooperation between both ministries in significant issues during the past period, and recently cooperation in the arrangement and preparation for hosting COP27. This Conference is one of the largest international conferences of the United Nations, and it will be hosted by Egypt in Sharm El-Sheikh by the end of this year.

The Minister of Environment also added that the meeting discussed the coordination mechanism to provide equipment and devices that will be used in COP27 and refer to the National Media Authority (Maspero) to check the existing devices, and the requirements that MCIT will work on to implement in COP27, in coordination with the agreement secretariat, in terms of using the latest global technologies. This is along with the development of the plans necessary to confront any difficulties or challenges that may be encountered during COP27. Accordingly, she stressed the significant role of MCIT in arranging COP27.

The Minister of Environment also clarified that the website of COP27 is designed for the host country in each session. Moreover, a mobile application will be created to facilitate the conference work. These recommendations will be implemented in the upcoming COP27. She also indicated that a special internal application could be created to serve visitors.

For his part, the ICT Minister praised the tireless efforts performed by the Ministry of Environment to improve and protect the environment in various regions in Egypt, and its keenness to scientifically preserve the natural wealth of Egypt so that it will always remain a global destination.

Talaat referred to the fruitful cooperation between both ministries in several fields to use and adapt ICT solutions to protect the environment and develop policies for the safe disposal of electronic and medical waste, along with reviewing the requirements for licensing the construction of cell towers to ensure that the safety of the environment is not violated.

Talaat added that COP27, which will be hosted by Egypt this year, is receiving international attention because of its importance. He stressed the insistence of the political leadership and the government to organize this global event in a manner befitting the position of Egypt. Moreover, he explained that the past period witnessed several meetings between both ministries to prepare well for COP27 and agree on the technological support required for the success of COP27 by providing the necessary digital devices and solutions.

The ICT Minister indicated that ICT smart systems, connection lines, as well as work and organization mechanisms for COP27 will be provided with modern technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI). Additionally, automated solutions will be provided to visitors and participants, starting from registration until leaving COP27.

Talaat also confirmed that all technological capabilities will be exploited so that this very significant international conference will come out at the highest level.
