The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat opened, today, Cairo Main Post Office in Attaba. He was accompanied by the Chairman of Egypt Post Sherif Farouk.
The Office has witnessed major development and refurbishment, with its historic value and original design remaining intact. It has been equipped with advanced systems and technological solutions, offering all kinds of financial, postal, and governmental services as well as Digital Egypt services.
During his visit, Talaat underlined that Egypt Post is a long-standing institution with a history spanning more than 150 years. He added that there are many antique post offices, some of which date back to 1870.
Talaat stated that opening the iconic Cairo Main Post Office in Attaba comes within the vision of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) for revamping historic post offices while preserving their original Egyptian character. Within such vision, the historic Aswan Post Office was also developed.
Cairo Main Post Office extends over 1,220 square meters. It features 32 customer service counters, a three-window VIP room, and a disability counter. The office now has three ATMs and seven customer queue displays. It operates from Saturday to Thursday, from 8 am to 9 pm.
The renovation process involved removing old elements that spoiled the original structure. Drop ceiling tiles, old wooden wall panels, and damaged plaster have been removed, revealing its iconic original structural and architectural elements such as old red bricks, local stones, wrought iron, and valuable timber. Original fixtures have also been preserved and repaired.
Other revamping steps included ensuring good ventilation and natural lighting inside the office, in addition to providing high-quality furniture that complements the building’s historic character, creating a more comfortable environment for employees and customers. More customer service windows and waiting spaces have also been added to create a seamless customer experience
For his part, Farouk highlighted that opening Cairo Main Post Office after development and restoration is part of Egypt Post’s huge efforts to refurbish and upgrade historic post offices. He added that Egypt Post created a list of historic post offices and buildings and devised a comprehensive plan to modernize them while protecting their original character following the latest sustainability approaches.
Farouk revealed that the execution rate of the plan has been exceeding the schedule targets. By the end of this year, he said, 3,500 post offices will have been completely developed.
