ICT Minister Witnesses Signing of Agreement between MCIT, Baheya Foundation

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Applied Innovation Center (AIC) of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), and Baheya Foundation for Early Detection and Treatment of Women's Breast Cancer. The aim is to develop innovative AI-powered solutions for the early detection of breast cancer by mammography.

The goal behind the collaboration is to automate the breast cancer detection process by detecting masses (tumors) in mammograms and distinguishing benign and malignant tumors. Some steps of the process will be performed automatically using AI, an ideal solution to assisting medical staff, reducing the time and cost of periodic screenings, and raising efficiency in general, helping serve more women on a regular basis.

Commenting on the signing, the head of AIC Ahmed Tantawy highlighted the Center's role in using the latest technologies to develop world-class applied solutions to overcome the challenges that different state sectors face and contribute to advancing growth and prosperity.

For her part, member of the board of trustees of Baheya Foundation and chair of the innovation and technology committee Gilan Felfela thanked the ICT Minister for the opportunity to create a protocol of cooperation to keep up with global advancements and serve Egyptian women. She highlighted that using AI in the early detection of breast cancer through mammography will significantly reduce screening time and cost, and thus helping examine more women.

The signing of the protocol coincides with the opening of the first phase of Baheya Hospital in Sheikh Zayed, in March. The Hospital boasts five early detection units and can accommodate as many as 400 women per day when the units are fully operational, added Felfela.

The agreement was signed by Advisor to the ICT Minister for Research and Development Noha Adly and Felfela, in the presence of Tantawy via videoconference.
