ICT Minister Visits Salam Post, Telemedicine Unit at Kharga Specialized Hospital during Visiting New Valley

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat, concluding his visit to New Valley Governorate, has inspected Kharga Specialized Hospital. He was accompanied by the Governor of New Valley Mohamed Salman Al Zamlot and the Minister of Education and Technical Education Reda Hegazy. They were received by the Advisor to the ICT Minister for Digital Community Development Hoda Dahroug.

Kharga Specialized Hospital provides medical services within the framework of the telemedicine system, implemented in cooperation among the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), the Ministry of Health and Population, and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The telemedicine system aims to develop the medical services provided to unprivileged citizens, especially in remote and deprived areas, and raise the efficiency of the health services system by benefiting from the latest ICT applications.

The number of telemedicine units in New Valley Governorate reached 11, available in Kharga Specialized Hospital, Paris Central Hospital, Balat Central Hospital, Dakhla General Hospital, Farafra Central Hospital, Munira Unit, Bulaq Unit, Max Unit, Gharb El Mawhoub Unit, Jadida Unit, and Abu Huraira Unit. The system helped serve about 2,500 patients in New Valley, from September 2021 to May 2023.

On the national level, the telemedicine system provided its health services to over 50,000 patients, who were examined and diagnosed by over 600 doctors and 150 administrators and coordinators through 150 telemedicine units that operated during the first phase of the telemedicine initiative. Around 150 other units are also being established to join the system, aiming to reach 300 units in different governorates nationwide.

It is worth noting that the telemedicine system was launched in 2021 within the framework of achieving the national strategy for digital transformation and supporting the health services system as part of the efforts made to develop and raise the efficiency of all government services by leveraging ICT in providing decent services to citizens in all governorates.

The telemedicine system improves the medical and health services provided to citizens by using technology to connect health units in those areas to central units in university hospitals. The system provides patients with the best medical services from senior consultant doctors and specialists in university hospitals without the need to travel long distances. Parallelly, it also enhances scientific communication between practitioners and senior doctors and provides immediate medical solutions to its users, including patients and doctors, facilitating citizens’ access to healthcare services nationwide.

In a similar vein, Talaat, Hegazy, and Al Zamlot visited the Intellectual Education School and Al Amal School for the Deaf in Kharga. They were received by the Chairman of the National Academy of Information Technology for Persons with Disabilities (NAID) AbdEl-Monem El-Sharkawy.

MCIT provided the schools with technological programs and supported the development of technological capabilities. The Ministry also equipped the schools with computers, printers, and projectors to facilitate the students’ access to education and provide specialized technological training for teachers.

This comes within the framework of MCIT plan to support the educational process for PwDs. MCIT had previously cooperated with the Ministry of Education in implementing a project to improve the educational process for PwDs. Phase one of the project covered 810 special education and integration schools, and nearly 30,000 teachers nationwide have been trained and upskilled.

In July 2021, the two ministries signed a cooperation protocol on supporting and developing the inputs of the educational process to improve services provided to students with disabilities. Under the protocol, about 15,000 teachers and mentors were trained nationwide on the IT and Assistive Technologies (AT) usage in educational integration to facilitate the educational process for these students. In addition, around 100 schools were equipped with computers, printers, and projectors to facilitate the educational process.

Around 33 schools were equipped in New Valley Governorate and nearly 1,000 teachers were trained, under the two ministries’ cooperation. Currently, more schools are being equipped and teachers are being trained, especially in underserved areas, in line with other initiatives such as Decent Life, within the framework of the state’s vision.

During the tour, Talaat and the accompanying delegation were introduced to various educational activities that help students develop their skills and capabilities using technology. They also visited the student exhibition, and some students presented art performances.

Talaat also listened to technological needs-related demands for the schools of the governorate. He called for providing more support for students with disabilities in New Valley Governorate and nationwide in general.

Moreover, the ICT Minister, accompanied by New Valley Governor, inspected Salam Post building, which is consisted of two floors and provides all postal and financial services to citizens. They were received by Acting Chairperson of Egypt Post Abdo Elwan.

The ground floor of Salam Post building spans 300 square meters, and the first floor is a highly equipped training center that provides training programs for the staff.

There are eight postal areas in New Valley. They include 49 post offices, with 450 employees. Forty-one offices have been developed, six of which are in the villages targeted within Decent Life.

Furthermore, civil status services are provided in 14 post offices in the governorate, and the number of Egypt Post ATMs reached 41 in New Valley.

It is noteworthy that the ICT Minister visited New Valley Governorate to open and inspect several MCIT projects in Kharga. He opened Creativa Innovation Hub and WE Applied Technology School and checked the progress made in the project of connecting the government complex to the New Administrative Capital. Talaat also witnessed the signing of an MoU on implementing digital institutional development projects in the governorate.
