The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has witnessed the signing of an MoU between the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) and the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The MoU covered several cooperation frameworks and mechanisms in areas including managing spectrum and maximizing its revenues, rendering telecom services in remote areas, raising awareness and protecting telecom users, securing networks, and building capacity, among others.
The signing ceremony took place on the first day of the Global Symposium for Regulators 2023 (GSR-23), held under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Egypt, on June 5-8 in Sharm El-Sheikh. GSR-23 is attended by 700 ICT regulators, policymakers, and digital stakeholders from more than 100 countries.
The MoU was signed with the aim of enhancing cooperation between Egypt and the US in telecom regulation and market governance. It builds on previous collaboration and historical ties between the two countries. Egypt and the US have always been keen to exchange technical expertise and participate in training and capacity-building programs in ICT regulation.
The MoU was signed by NTRA Executive President Hossam El-Gamal and FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel.
Talaat held a meeting with Rosenworcel and her delegation. They discussed enhancing cooperation and exchanging expertise between Egypt and the US in telecom regulation and emerging technologies.
In a similar vein, the ICT Minister met with Vice-Minister for Policy Coordination at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) in Japan Hiroshi Yoshida. They explored ways to strengthen collaboration between Egypt and Japan in ICT areas.
Talaat and Yoshida discussed cooperation within the framework of the MoU inked by the two countries during the Japanese Prime Minister’s visit to Egypt in April. It covers different technology fields, most notably AI, cybersecurity, digital capacity building, data centers, offshoring centers, 5G, and 6G. The meeting shed light on the characteristics of the Egyptian ICT sector and the promising investment opportunities it holds for Japanese companies.
The ICT Minister is due to open the inaugural session of GSR-23 on Tuesday. The event addresses global ICT regulation issues.
